traumatologia cabecera

Orthopaedics studies all injuries and diseases related to the musculoskeletal system. Between the pathologies treated by this medical specialty, it is worth mentioning the herniated disc, scoliosis, fractures and dislocations of the bones, ligament, tendon and muscle injuries and bone tumours.

When should you go to the orthopaedic surgeon?

You should visit the orthopaedic surgeon when there is pain, an injury or a trauma to the musculoskeletal system. After the evaluation of the specialist, he will determine what tests are necessary to diagnose the problem and to be able to fix it with the appropriate treatment.

The most common injuries in traumatology

Amongst the most frequent injuries that are treated in the traumatology clinic are knee pain, shoulders and foot pain.

Fractures and injuries of the bones, joint injuries and ligaments (sprains, arthritis ...) are also common.

The orthopaedic surgeon also treats patients with ruptured fibres, bruises or muscle aches.

What is orthopaedic surgery?

Orthopaedic surgery is a specialty of surgery that corrects problems in the musculoskeletal system, that is, in muscles, bones or joints.

We should also highlight certain treatments such as prosthetic knee, shoulder and hip surgery.

Arthroscopic surgery is also performed, which consists of making two small incisions. Through one of them, a camera is introduced and, on the other hand, the necessary instruments.

Treatment of hip fractures in the elderly

One of the most frequent fractures in the elderly are hip fractures. In fact, it is predicted that 30,000 are produced each year in Spain. Usually, they are produced by a banal fall and they are very conditioned by osteoporosis.

The treatment of these fractures consists of surgery to get the patient to walk again and be as independent as possible.

When the fracture occurs in the neck of the femur a prosthesis is placed. If the fracture is in the area below the neck of the femur, it will require the placement of metal devices such as screws or plates.

3% of adolescents have scoliosis

Scoliosis is very common in children and adolescents. It can be classified as child scoliosis (appears before 3 years), juvenile scoliosis (develops between 4 and 20 years) and adolescent scoliosis (appears after 10 years).

It is a process of deformation of the spine and thorax that appears during the growth stage.

Parents may suspect that their child has scoliosis when they see a shoulder or hip higher than the other, a shorter limb, or a head and neck that is leaning.

To confirm that the child has scoliosis, the orthopaedic surgeon will request a complete body radiography. Radiographies are also made with formetric tests that do not give radiation.

Regarding the treatment, it can be varied depending on whether a functional treatment is required (sport, electrostimulation ...) or corrective and surgical treatments, depending on the degree of scoliosis.
