What you should know about the nervous system?

The central nervous system is composed of all those structures that are responsible for regulating the functioning of the body, i.e. the brain (brain, brainstem and cerebellum) and spinal cord.

On the other hand, there is the peripheral nervous system that is formed by the cranial and peripheral nerves.

Finally, neurosurgery also treats the autonomic nervous system, that is, the neurons or groups of neurons that make up the brainstem up to the spinal cord and those that are outside the marrow. This system ensures the correct functioning of the heart, breathing, etcetera.

Guided surgery in the operation of the skull and spine

The neuronavigator is a computer-guided surgery system that allows the neurosurgeon to locate itself inside the brain. This system is formed by a computer with several screens in which images of the brain (magnetic resonance) are observed through which they can pinpoint exactly where the injury is located in the patient.

In addition, it incorporates a neuronavigated ultrasound system to perform an ultrasound of the brain during the operation, which increases the effectiveness of the treatment.

This system is used in the extraction of all types of brain tumors and those located at the base of the skull, the spine and to place transpedicular screws.

The advantages of neurosurgery in the Canary Islands

Neurosurgery is one of the most complex medical specialties. Therefore, in ‘This’ we offer the experience and professionalism of Dr. Pérez Orribo to our patients.

In Tenerife, the doctor has state-of-the-art technology in the surgical treatment of nervous system injuries, which allows for greater safety and efficacy in the procedure.

      Dr. Luis Pérez Orribo

Dr. Luis F. Pérez Orribo has extensive professional experience in the area of neurosurgery. The doctor graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of La Laguna in 2005 and completed his residency in Neurosurgery at the University Hospital of the Canary Islands between 2006 and 2011. His doctoral thesis won a special award from the University of La Laguna in 2015, his thesis deals with the design, manufacture and clinical testing of a new surgical tool for spine surgery.

In addition to his professional experience in the islands, the doctor has completed his training at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Arizona where he performed a specific rotation in complex spine surgery and vascular neurosurgery. In the same center he carried out the ‘Research Fellowship’ in Column Biomechanics and Spinal Complex Surgery during the years 2011 and 2012.

In recent years he has continued to improve his education obtaining a master’s degree in pain management and health management, as well as a university expert course in spine surgery and tumors.
