Interventional cardiology is a subspecialty inside cardiology that allows us to study, diagnose and treat every cardiovascular disease via invasive techniques, through puncture of the artery or the vein.
What does interventional cardiology do?
Through intracardiac studies, the pressures, the functioning of the heart valves, the presence of malformations, the volumes of the cardiac cavities and the anatomy of the heart are studied. This way, a diagnosis of the disease is attained, in addition to knowing its consequences in the heart.
Another function of interventional cardiology is to perform treatments for heart disease through local anaesthesia.
Catheterizations in interventional cardiology
Almost every heart disease can be diagnosed by cardiac catheterization. The specialist will consider previously the risks and the possibility of making the diagnosis through other non-invasive tests. In case of doubts the catheterization will be the elected procedure to an accurate diagnosis.
The catheterization helps to diagnose diseases of the arteries of the heart, because it allows to see the obstructions and its severity. With the result of the test, the doctor will be able to indicate the appropriate treatment.
Another type of catheterization is the therapeutic one, which allows to perform the treatment directly. One of the possibilities is placing a coronary stent in the artery of the heart. This is placed through a catheter similar to the one used in the diagnosis. It is a less aggressive procedure than coronary bypass surgery.
What is hemodynamic?
Hemodynamic studies everything related to the blood circulation in the cardiovascular system. The study is done by introducing fine catheters through the arteries located
in the groin or arm. It will allow the doctor to know exactly how the blood vessels of both the body and the heart are located.
The benefits of interventional cardiology in the Canary Islands
In This we offer our patients the latest technology applied to the diagnosis and treatment of pathologies through interventional cardiology. Our partner centre also has a highly qualified team of professionals to develop these procedures and a great experience.
