Do you have health problems caused by obesity?

Obesity Surgery

The treatment of obesity is not an esthetic problem, but a health one, since it causes the development of other diseases such as diabetes, hypertension or cholesterol. Bariatric surgery (common name of obesity surgery) is the most effective approach for a lasting weight reduction and to recover from the associated health problems.

At “Obesidad Tenerife” we perform a detailed study of the overweight situation of the patient (body mass index, fat percentage, presence of visceral fat, associated cardiovascular risk factors, etc.) and we offer an analytic recommendation of the possible risks and benefits that the surgery could give to the patient, establishing if the patient is a good candidate for a bariatric surgery. What is obesity surgery?

Bariatric surgery is the patient’s health global improvement through the effective and long-lasting reduction of body weight and the correction of associated diseases to the unusual amount of fat (diabetes, hypertension …). Therefore, bariatric surgery should not be confused with those treatments whose central objective is the improvement of the patient’s body image (liposculpture, breast augmentation, hair implants, etc.), or with endoscopic treatments (intragastric balloon, POSE method), which do not offer a permanent resolution to the problem of obesity.

The principal objective of obesity surgery is to reduce the mortality or the risk of suffering from incapacitating diseases common to obese people. Consequently, although these surgeries result in esthetical advantages and increase the patient’s self-esteem, as a consequence of weight loss, these should not be the reasons to recommend the surgery.

How is the obesity surgery performed?

Obesity surgery (gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric banding, etc.) changes the shape, size and function of some parts of the digestive system such as the stomach or the intestine. That increases the satiating effect, patients feel “filled up” with less food than before and consequently eat a smaller amount of calories. In addition to this restrictive effect, that all bariatric techniques share (gastric bypass, stomach reduction or sleeve gastrectomy) and some non-surgical methods (such as the POSE method or the intragastric balloon), some operations such as gastric bypass add a malabsorption effect, limiting the absorption of foods in the intestinal tract by “bypassing” a portion of the small intestine, by which fewer calories are absorbed than those that are ingested.

Is obesity surgery safe?

Obesity surgery is very safe, it’s been improved in recent years achieving less complications and low mortality. We should consider that obesity itself involves a risk of dying superior to the risk of a person with normal weight. It has been shown that a person with obesity who does not get the surgery has a six times greater risk of dying than someone getting the surgery and solving his health problem.

To be precise, the biggest risk an obese patient is facing, according to his long-term health, is “not getting the surgery” and remaining obese.

These surgeries currently are performed laparoscopically, with general anaesthesia, so the postoperative is not painful. The patient will be able to make a relatively normal life from the third or fourth day from the intervention. After the first two weeks, if there are no complications, the patient can restart their usual social and work activities without any limitations.
