Hospital San Juan de Dios has a long history in non-surgical treatments for stomach reduction without incisions or surgery. A procedure that currently offers better types of methods, such as, the POSE and Gastric Balloon and both are practised at our partner’s hospital.
Something to take into account, due to the fact, that obesity is regarded by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the epidemic of the 21st century. With numbers at a global scale, reaching amounts of:
- 300 million obese and
- 1 billion overweight.
Data that positions overweight and obesity as one of the main health problems of industrialized countries. In this sense, these two methods of incisional stomach reduction, represents a great advance in the fight against these pathologies and in turn each can be more specific: Obesity (Gastric Balloon and POSE) and Overweight (POSE).
The PSOE method of stomach reduction without incisions or surgery
This method, until recently was something unthinkable, stomach reduction without incisions or surgery, since, it is done entirely via oral cavity, with a simple endoscopy. It consists of making a series of folds in the gastric fundus in order to modify the size of the stomach to reduce it and, in turn, in the den to slow down its emptying process.
The goal here is to generate a feeling of satiety, by reducing the stomach with folds, even when eating a small amount of food.
What are the advantages of this stomach reduction without incisions or surgery?
Based on the principles of this method to fight overweight and/or obesity through stomach reduction without incisions or surgery, and what this implies, the advantages it presents are:
- Less Discomfort
- Decreasing the risk of infections
- No external scars
- Recovery in less time
- Shorter or outpatient hospital stay
In addition, the duration of the intervention is usually 50 minutes and under general anaesthesia, although, as this is a simple (low-risk) intervention, admission is usually outpatient.
- IMPORTANT NOTE – The surgeon will determine, depending on each particularity case, the necessary hospitalization time.
What results can be expected from the POSE method against Overweight and Obesity?
From Hospital San Juan de Dios in Tenerife, they indicate that, with POSE you can lose between 45%-55% of your excess weight.
But keep in mind that the end result of the treatment is largely linked to your adherence to the eating and lifestyle re-education program proposed by the hospital’s multidisciplinary team.
Gastric Balloon as a method for stomach reduction without incisions in overweight
In the case of the Gastric Balloon, it is a method of stomach reduction by a device that occupies an important part of the stomach. For this reason, it generates a feeling of early satiety in the patient and this device (balloon) can be placed for six or twelve months.
In this sense, the 12 months Balloon is considered by the vast majority of specialists as the most effective and safe non-invasive method to treat obesity.
What does the treatment for incisionless stomach reduction consist of?
This is a procedure that begins with the introduction of a silicone sphere (balloon) into the patient’s stomach. Which, as noted above, causes a feeling of immediate and prolonged satiety. Once this stage has passed and taking as reference the 12 months Balloon.
At Hospital San Juan de Dios, they indicate, that, during this time the patient has participated in a food re-education plan to manage to change their habits and adopt a healthy lifestyle.
Why is the 12 months Balloon better than 6 months better?
Simply because food treatment and re-education last longer and the size can be modified depending on the evolution of the treatment.
Who are these treatments indicated for?
The reduction of stomach without incisions is indicated in those cases in which the patient presents a Body Mass Index (BMI) from 27 to 40 and that has not managed to lose weight with diets and exercise.
POSE is also recommended in patients who have regained weight after treatment with intragastric balloon or who do not wish to undergo major surgery.
In turn, the Gastric Balloon is indicated in BMI > 40 with surgical limitations or that refuse surgical treatment and as a “bridge” to obesity surgery (reducing surgical risk).
- DATA– The acronym for the POSE method is Primary Obesity Surgery Endoluminal
