Personalized surgery of the cataract with the LenSx Fentosecond Laser

The LenSx femtosecond laser has been designed and developed to offer the patient a completely customized cataract surgery.

The video-microscope allows the surgeon to use the patient’s eye as a direct reference to program the laser parameters. That allows you to simply adjust before and during the surgery the location, size and shape of each one of the incisions, the fragmentation of the lens and the deepness of the cut.

More Information

How does the Femtosecond Laser work in cataract surgery?

Phacoemulsification is a minimally invasive technique in which the lens is dissolved, disintegrated or undone by the emission of ultrasounds, being afterwards aspirated through small incisions in the cornea.

It is an intervention under topical anaesthesia (eye drops), it is painless and has a very fast functional recovery, usually in a few of hours.

Once the lens has been removed, a diffractive intraocular lens of a biocompatible material is inserted, which will allow a clear vision, both distant and close distances, reaching great independence in the use of glasses.

Phases of surgery with the LenSx Femtosecond Laser

1st Capsulotomy:

The laser creates a perfectly centered capsulorhexis. This is relevant since the proper size of the capsulotomy affects the adequate positioning of the lens.

2nd Lens Fragmentation:

The lens nucleus is fragmented in quadrants, enabling its elimination using very little phacoemulsification energy.

3rd Corneal wounds and incisions:

Finally, the main incision is performed, through which the fragmented lens is extracted and where the intraocular lens is inserted; the paracentesis or secondary incision, as well as the arcuate incisions.

The laser can make multiplanar incisions to facilitate the accurate sealing of the incisions after surgery.

What are the cataracts?

Cataracts are the principal cause of reversible blindness in the world. They appear when the lens (the natural lens that the human eye has to focus the images) becomes opaque or cloudy and avoids us from seeing clearly. They appear mainly because of aging, so the cataract is a vision problem that the entire population may suffer at some point of their lives. It is not a disease, but a consequence of ocular aging.

Some of its symptoms can be: vision loss, decreased visual acuity, increased sensitivity to light (it is common for dazzle to happen that affects negatively to driving, for example), alterations in the perception of colours, diplopia (double vision in the eye affected by the cataract), etc.

With more than 50,000 interventions performed, Miranza Clínica Muiños, is to be found as one of the best options to solve cataract problems.
